Vegan Chocolate Orange Cookies (Gluten Free, Oil Free)
Soft chunky cookies that have crispy edges and soft centres. Bursting with the delicious combination of chocolate and orange. These vegan chocolate orange cookies are gluten free too.
Match Made in Heaven
Yep that’s right, chocolate and orange is the perfect combination. Have you see just how many brands are bringing out their own version of chocolate orange recently. You can’t walk through a supermarket now without coming across at least three different brands that have all jump on this bandwagon.
How to Make Them Allergen Friendly
Now I know most of them are not allergy friendly. Some of them are gluten free though like the Cadbury’s chocolate orange buttons. But alas they are not dairy free. Don’t worry through as Asda do sell there own free from version of chocolate orange buttons. Now like with most free from products they are a quarter of the size and work out much more expensive!
What Orange Flavoured Chocolate to Use
For these vegan chocolate orange cookies, I used moo free chocolate. Since I made them at Easter I used a chocolate orange Easter egg that I chopped up. If you struggle to find suitable chocolate you could always use dark chocolate. Then with the addition of the orange extract already used in this recipe. The end result will still be a delicious batch chocolate orange cookies.
How to Make Them Gluten Free Cookies
For this recipe to be gluten free. I used Asda brand gluten free flour. It’s my go to flour for all things baking as it’s cheap around 45p-50p and has a good blend of flours. Another popular brand is doves farm gluten free flours. These cookies don’t require any xanthan gum. As they don’t crumble or fall apart. Make sure you leave them to cool for 5 minutes on the baking tray once baked. As this will allow them to firm up a bit and stop them from breaking when handled.
No Chill Cookie Dough
Since these cookies don’t spread in the oven. You don’t need to let them chill before baking them. Do press the balls of cookie dough down with the back of a spoon though to create the thickness you want. Since like I said that won’t spread out.
Ingredients Needed
Gluten free plain flour
Dairy free butter (a hard block not the spreadable kind)
Coconut sugar
Orange juice
Non dairy milk
Zest of an orange
Orange Extract
A bar of chocolate orange
Bicarbonate of soda
Baking powder
How to Store the Chocolate Orange Cookies
Once baked allow to cool completely before placing them in an airtight container. A batch of these cookies have never lasted more than 3 days without be devoured. Just try and not eat them all straight for the oven. When the chocolate is still melty and the cookies are warm. They are the best thing I’ve eaten in along time.

Vegan Chocolate Orange Cookies
Soft chunky cookies that have crispy edges and soft centres. Bursting with the delicious combination of chocolate and orange. These vegan chocolate orange cookies are gluten free too.
Ingredients
- 165 grams Gluten free plain flour
- 70 grams A hard block of vegan butter (not the spreadable kind)
- 20 grams Coconut sugar
- 1 tbsp Non dairy milk
- 3 tbsp Orange juice
- 1 tsp Orange extract
- 1 medium Orange Zest
- 40 grams Orange Chocolate
- 1/2 tsp Baking powder
- 1/4 tsp Baking soda
Instructions
-
Pre heat oven to 180c and line a baking tray with grease proof paper.
-
In a medium sized mixing bowl rub the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and butter together until you have a breadcrumb texture.
-
Next add in the orange juice, non dairy milk, orange extract and orange zest. Mix together to form cookie dough.
-
Roughly chop your chocolate and stir it through the cookie dough.
-
Scoop cookie dough into balls. i used a tbsp to measure them out. This created 9 small cookies. Flatten the balls down with the back of the spoon as they wont spread in the oven.
-
Bake them at 180c for 8-12 minutes depending on your oven. i do mine for 10 minutes. Remove them from the oven when they are slightly golden brown.
-
Leave them to cool on the baking tray for 5 minutes before moving them to a cooling rack as they will be pretty soft. This allows them to firm up a bit more before you handle them.
-
Store any leftover cookies in the an airtight container for 3-5 days. If you can resist not eating them all in the first day!
