Cashews are such a versatile ingredient they are ideal for a vegan diet. They really shine through in this cashew cream cheese recipe.
With a very creamy mouthfeel and a neutral taste cashews make an excellent ingredient in all sorts of recipes. From cheeses, to sauces and even desserts they really are one the most versatile ingredients to have in your cupboard.
Many people’s reason for not being able to give up dairy is the fact that they would miss cheese or ice cream too much. Nowadays there are so many dairy free or vegan alternatives on the market that you won’t miss out on your favourite treats.
From coconut based ice creams and cheese for the nut allergy suffers. To almond and cashew based ice creams and cheese there really is something for everyone these days.
Personally, I haven’t tried mainly blocks of hard dairy free/ vegan cheese. As I was never a massive fan of cheese to begin with. It just wasn’t something I craved a lot. I did however recently have a pretty amazing grilled cheese sandwich which was also gluten free at a local café near me called Unity Grill.
To say it was a game changer wouldn’t be too steep of a remark. Finding somewhere that sells gluten free and dairy free food is not easy where I live. Which only made this sandwich ever better.

This is how I came to make this cream cheese recipe.
Ingredients you will need:
- Raw unsalted cashews
- Nutritional yeast
- Salt and pepper
Although this is a super easy recipe you do need to plan ahead a little. Allowing enough time for your cashews to soak will give you the smoothest and creamiest result.
Nutrional yeast is another key player in making anything cheese flavoured. Its rising popularity has made it a lot easier to find and recently a lot of supermarkets have starting selling it. If yours doesn’t yet then you can always buy it off amazon. Let’s face it what can’t you find on amazon these days!
A delicious and versatile cashew cream cheese which has become my go-to base recipe for a lot of cheese sauces and dips. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Cashew Cream Cheese (VG, GF)
- 200 grams Raw unsalted cashews
- 4 tbsp Nutritional yeast
- 1/2 small Lemon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 250 ml water
Place cashews in a jug and cover with enough water to submerge them. Place in fridge and leave to soak for at least 6 hours or overnight
Drain and rinse cashews. Then add cashews and remaining ingredients to a high speed blender or food processor.
Blend everything together until you have a smooth spreadable consistency. Adjust seasoning to taste,
Store cashew cream cheese in an air tight container in the fridge for up to a week,
