Homemade Apple Sauce

One of the easiest things to make. All you need is peeled and roughly chopped cooking apples. I used bramley apples, water, sugar and cinnamon which is optional. You need just enough water to cover the bottom of your pot, then add in your apples and leave to simmer. Once your apples are tender add the sugar, I used coconut sugar, this is where you can adjust it to suit your taste. Next add the cinnamon again to suit your taste or leave it out.

Grab a potato masher or a fork and mash all the apples until you have a smooth consistency. You can of course leave some lumps of apple if you want a chunky applesauce its again totally up to you. Leave to cool before storing in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. Or freeze the applesauce if you won’t use it all in time.

Why make your own apple sauce?

Because its super simple and way better for you, not to mention tastier. If you have an apple tree or know someone who does then it also makes it so much cheaper too.

For me, I like an applesauce to be more on the tart side and less sweet. Here’s where you can tailor it to fit your taste. I opt for a little coconut sugar to cut through the tartness. How much you use depends on the apples, how ripe they are and your own preference. Then I finished it off with some cinnamon. I find this helps balance everything out and works great for this apple cinnamon granola. You can leave it out if you want to use this apple sauce for savoury dishes as well as sweet.

Luckily for me I have two apple trees in my back garden. The bigger of the two is a bramley apple tree and produces about ten times more apples than I could ever use. For this reason, I give as much as I can away to neighbours and family to use. Then I peel and chop up a few bags worth and freeze them for use later in the year. Then finally I go a little apple draft in the kitchen and try and think of new and creative ways to incorporate them into my cooking and baking. Even then I still can’t use them all up.

For the second tree it produces eating apples, I think they are cox apples but am not sure. This tree is much smaller and only produces a fraction of the bramley apple tree. The apples get use for snacks and toppings to yoghurt, cereal or pancakes.

Ingredients Needed For Apple Cinnamon Granola

Buckwheat flakes or gluten free oats

Applesauce homemade or store brought

Flaked almonds (optional)

glass jar of granola

Oil Free Granola

Yes it is possible to make crunchy granola without the use of oil. It just takes a bit of experimenting with ratios. You get a granola that has bigger crunchy cluster as apposed to every individual flake being crunchy. If that makes sense.
